"It's only when we give it away that we truly receive the blessings"

Through my podcast and training programs I offer real world advice from someone who’s been where you are and has struggled through the same kinds of problems you face every day.
The way I see it you have 3 options for your business:

  • Option #1: You could do nothing. Unfortunately, most contractors choose this path. They’re satisfied working for their business just making wages or taking an occasional draw when there’s a little cash leftover at the end of the month. But that’s not really a business is it?
  • Option #2: You came up through the trades and are a master of your craft. Unfortunately, you never learned the business end of the business but are slowly learning from your experience. Usually, that means long hours away from your family and just not making the money you should for all that hard work.
  • Option #3: You can take action now! Your goal is to grow a more profitable business that will work for you by providing a great lifestyle for you and your family and which can be sold for top dollar to support you in retirement. Now that’s a business!

“Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others.”Otto von Bismarck

ANSWER:

If you chose option #3 congratulations!

You’re ready to put in the hard work to join the select few contractors that not only survive through the economic ups and downs but consistently thrive. You’re committed to learning the business skills required to remove the chaos, grow a profitable business, and have more free time to use as you choose. The most important thing I did to grow my wildly successful roofing business was to start off with a plan. A Business Plan. With the help of my coach, I took a step back and determined where I wanted to go. My destination. Only then could I reverse engineer a roadmap to get me there on the most direct route.

5 QUICK ROOFING SALES TIPS

  • Create an assumed expertise and authority around yourself. The more gear you have and the more presentable you look the better. I wear a satchel that carries an iPad, a notebook, chalk, a 5-1 tool, business cards, a clipboard, gloves, and a tape measure. I wear jeans usually, and a collared polo t shirt. Sometimes hat. Always tucked in with a belt. This right off the bat shows the homeowner you are a professional, and you take pride in what you do. Try not to look too hungover, I know it’s tough some days.
  • Photos/Video take lots of photos on the roof, usually of problem areas, pictures of all the slopes, as well as every component (pipe-boots, dryer vents, ridge vents, counter flashing, chimneys, vents, etc.), plus pictures of Hail damage or wind damage, etc.  After I take photos I then take chalk and circle hail hits to shingles or collateral damage (gutters, metal vents, etc), as well as chalk up any missing shingles, low nails, rotten wood,  etc. Then I can come down off the ladder, put on my Go Pro and shoot a quick 1:30-:2:00 minute video of the damage , which I narrate to show the homeowner of their roof, which  gives them clarity, sets myself up as the expert, creates urgency and gets homeowner to take ownership of the damage, while setting me apart from the other roofers who took pictures or never got on the roof at all.

  •  Energy. Visualize you are giving the homeowner a 100$ bill for free in your head. This is the energy you want to give off. You want to truly believe in your company/installers/product to the point where the homeowner can palpably feel the value they are getting based off your tone, emotion, and body language. So visualize, in your head, you are there to give that person 100$ just to see them smile. And capture that energy.
  •  Always write the estimate on the spot if possible. And provide the homeowner with samples for them to keep. I try to close on the spot every time, sometimes it’s not possible, but make sure they have the quote and samples and info to look over as soon as you leave them. Personalize this too, because all roofers do the same shit. I started creating my own folders and stapling my business card to it.
  • Another way to set ourselves apart from the competition is to go in the attack. Not only do no other Roofing Sales Reps usually go in the attack, but if we are going to inspect the top of the roof, then it only makes sense that we look underneath the roof, which is a great way to find leaks and issues not visible from the top of the roof.
